MAWKYRWAT, Aug 13: The alleged assault of a youth by a Sub-Inspector (SI) continues to draw a spate of denunciations, and in a fresh appeal, the KSU from South West Khasi Hills has petitioned Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui for SI Vicky Kharkongor’s immediate transfer.
Only on Thursday, the Seng Samla Shnong Nonglang, Dorbar Shnong Nonglang and the KSU Mawkyrwat Circle had moved the SP, stating that the SI should be immediately transferred from Mawkyrwat.
In a letter to the home minister on Friday, the KSU said the recent case of reported police high-handedness at Nonglang village has brought a ‘bad reputation’ to the Police department.
Condemning the act, the KSU sought Rymbui’s intervention and his assurance that similar incidents will not happen again.
“The people of our district have been fully cooperating with the Police department and the district administration, especially during this time of pandemic. But we cannot deny the fact that the presence of this kind of an officer, who misuses his position and power, has brought bad taste on the general public,” the KSU said.
“We believe that as a minister and a public representative of the state, you will take this matter seriously as it has brought fear among people and it has damaged the good reputation of the Police department,” it added.
It may be mentioned that according to a police complaint filed by the victim Amostar Tongwah, who hails from Nonglang village in South West Khasi Hills, the SI had, on the night of August 9, forcibly entered the former’s house in an inebriated state and assaulted him. The youth had also informed that following the assault, he suffered head and chest injuries, and was immediately rushed to Mawkyrwat CHC.
