Thompson-Hera wins women’s 100 at Diamond League finals
Zurich, Sep 10: Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah finished her season with another victory, clocking a meet record 10.65 seconds to win the women’s 100 metres at the Diamond League finals. The Jamaican earned her third Diamond League title on Thursday by pulling away from Dina Asher-Smith of Britain, who was second in 10.83 seconds. World record-holder Karsten Warholm of Norway defended his Diamond League title by winning the men’s 400 metres hurdles in 47.35 seconds and Faith Kipyegon held off a surging Sifan Hassan on the final sprint to win the women’s 1,500 m in 3:58.33. Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy, who was a joint gold medallist in Tokyo, won the men’s high jump after clearing 2.34 metres. American Fred Kerley, the silver medallist in Tokyo, won the men’s 100 metres in 9.87 seconds. (AP)
Sharma lies T-22 at Wentworth
Wentworth (UK) , Sep 10: It was a tale of two nines for Shubhankar Sharma as he shot 2-under 70 to lie at T-22 in the opening round of the BMW PGA Championship here. Sharma was 2-over for the front nine with bogeys on third and seventh and then changed his fortunes with birdies on 14th and 15th and an eagle on Par-5 17th to be placed T-22. Play was suspended overnight due to darkness, with four groups remaining to complete in round one in the championship which is the third Rolex Series event of the 2021 Race to Dubai. (PTI)
Aditi at T-28 in Swiss Ladies Open
Holzhausern (Switzerland), Sep 10: Aditi Ashok was the best Indian with a card of 2-under 70 for T-28th spot after the opening round of the VP Bank Swiss Ladies Open on the Ladies European Tour here. Amandeep Drall, who had a Tied-4th place last week on LET Access Series, turned in a birdie-birdie finish to score even par 72 and was T-56, while the other Indians will need good second rounds to make the cut. Tvesa Malik, Gaurika Bishnoi and Vani Kapoor shot 1-over 73 each and were T-68th, while Ridhima Dilawari (75) was T-92. Astha Madan (81) was T-122 and certain to miss the cut. (PTI)
Turkey coach resigns after 6-1 loss
ANKARA, Sep 10: Turkey manager Senol Gunes has resigned from the job following a humbling defeat to the Netherlands in a World Cup qualifier this week. The Turkish Football Federation said in a statement it and Gunes reached a “mutual decision to part ways” following the 6-1 loss on Tuesday in Amsterdam. The defeat sparked widespread calls for the 69-year-old manager to step down. Gunes had also come under fire after Turkey crashed out of the European Championship after losing all three of its group games and a goal difference of minus 7. (AP)
Ronaldo to play against Newcastle
Manchester, Sep 10: Cristiano Ronaldo has been putting pressure on Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to hand him a start in the first appearance of his second spell at the English club. “He will definitely be on the pitch at some point,” Solskjaer said on Friday, a day before Ronaldo makes his Old Trafford return in an English Premier League game against Newcastle following his stunning move from Juventus. Mohammedan, Army Green win
Kolkata, Sep 10: Two-time former champions Mohammedan Sporting overwhelmed Central Reserve Police Force 5-1 in a Group A match to qualify for the quarterfinals of the 130th Durand Cup at the Kalyani Stadium on Friday. FC Bengaluru United (FCBU) were the first team from the group to qualify and will face will clash with Mohammedan in their third and final game to determine group standings on Tuesday. In another match, Deepak Singh scored a brace as Army Green football team earned three valuable points and kept their hopes alive with a 3-1 win over Jamshedpur FC in a Group B game at the Mohun Bagan ground. India reach QF of Chess Olympiad
Chennai, Sep 10: India on Friday sailed into the quarterfinals of the Fide Online Chess Olympiad, topping Pool B in the Top Division with an unbeaten record. On the final day of the league phase, India posted wins over Hungary and Moldova before sharing honours with Slovenia. The team led by former world champion Viswanathan Anand finished with seven wins and two draws for 16 points to emerge clear winner ahead of Hungary (15). The top two teams from the group advance to the play-offs. A team gets two points for a win and 1 point for a draw. The quarterfinals will be held on September 13. (PTI)
