SHILLONG, Sep 15: In what can be called a major blow to the educational scenario of Meghalaya, it has come to light that many students have failed to get admissions into government institutes after the declaration of SSLC results, reportedly due to inadequate infrastructure to accommodate them.
Flagging the issue, the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) central body on Wednesday called on Joint Director and District School Education Officer and highlighted the plights of many students who are struggling to secure a seat in government institutes.
The JSU, during the meeting, alleged that many students, especially the ones belonging to the economically weaker sections of society from Jaintia Hills, could not secure seats in government institutes such as Kiang Nangbah Government College, Government Boys Higher Secondary School and Government Girls Higher Secondary School after the declaration of this year’s SSLC results.
“The Union also met with the school principals to know the ground reality of the situation which clearly indicates that all seats are filled to their maximum capacity and the school infrastructure cannot accommodate any more students,” informed the JSU, demanding of the authorities to render an immediate solution so that the students are not deprived of education.
“These students are now in a dilemma and are faced with hardships to seek admission in private institutes. Their last hope is pinned only on government institutes to accommodate them,” the JSU said.
Arguing that the educational infrastructures are underutilised, the JSU has suggested that morning and evening shifts for classes XI and XII be introduced so that more seats will be available, which will, in turn, result in more availability of seats for students. “This step will benefit a huge number of students and open up opportunities for those who are currently undetermined with their future,” said the JSU.
Urging the students to not lose hope, the JSU has assured that it will be persistent on approaching the government authorities to find ways and means to address the issue.
