SHILLONG, Sep 22: Police on Tuesday arrested two persons in connection with an armed robbery, which took place at Meghalaya Rural Bank, Ksehbilat branch, in East Khasi Hills, on September 16.
Heavy Jones Kurkalang (25), who was arrested from his residence at Pomlakrai, Mawtharia, in East Khasi Hills, confessed to committing the crime and also led the investigating team to his accomplice Shiningstar Wahlang (23), who was apprehended from Wahkdait, Dong Pata, Madanrting, Block-G.
According to a statement issued here, two masked men had entered the branch between 5.15 and 5.30 pm on September 16 when only the branch manager, a lady, was present at the bank.
The two miscreants locked the bank from inside and forced the lady to open the strong room. But the duo only managed to rob Rs 10,000. They also took away the DVR of the CCTV to prevent being traced and caught.
Subsequently, an FIR was lodged on complaint by the Regional Manager, Meghalaya Rural Bank, with the Madanrting Police Station on September 17.
It may be mentioned that following police raids, the weapon used for the robbery was recovered under the mattress at Heavy Jones Kurkalang’s house.
The DVR, however, was recovered from a pond at Wahsnait.
Further interrogation by the police team is under way to ascertain their involvement in other criminal cases.
