SHILLONG, Sep 28: Meghalaya Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has expressed concern over an “unhealthy trend” taking place on social media platforms whereby information is rapidly disseminated without verification.
“With the advancement of smartphones, everyone now is a reporter or a critic. We are seeing people posting comments which are damaging. We are passing through a very unhealthy trend,” Rymbui said after inaugurating the website (www.jrbhss.in) of the Shillong Jail Road Boys’ Higher Secondary School at a function on Tuesday.
Stating that people are always focused on negative developments, Lahkmen Rymbui, who is also in charge of Education, said, “If the youth and children focus on the negative things then there is a big question mark on their future.”
Rymbui advised teachers to work towards eliminating the deficiencies of the students and try to foster their strengths. “We focus on the negative developments. It is time for us to groom our children to have a positive outlook through a vibrant atmosphere among the student community,” he said.
Talking about governance, Rymbui said that it is not possible for the government to fulfill all the aspirations of the people.
“We are working to set up more schools and on how to fulfil the aspirations of the teachers to remove the disparity of pay structure. But we need time to fulfil these aspirations with cooperation from all citizens,” the Education minister said.
Speaking about the launch of the new school website, Rymbui expressed hope that unlike others this website will remain active and keep being updated even as he stressed that a school website should provide correct information and work as a platform to enrich students with creativity.
On the other hand, North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum, who was also present on the occasion, said that the school has achieved another milestone with the launch of their website.
He also requested the state government to provide necessary support for overall development of the school.
It is worth mentioning here that assistant lecturer of the school, Rahul Chatterjee, who received the 2020 National Award to Teachers by the Government of India, donated 52 books from the catalogue of National Book Trust to the school library on the occasion.
Speaking at the programme, Chatterjee also stated that he will donate identical books to Lady Keane Girls’ School, where he was teaching earlier.
Others who were present on the occasion include school principal, J Pal, president of the school managing committee, Dr. Malay Dey, besides teachers, non-teaching staff, students among others.
