Renowned actor releases short film
NONGSTOIN, Oct 18: Onaatah actor, Merlvin Mukhim, in one of his latest works, has released a short film titled San Hajar, directed by Friday Kharbani and produced by Silver Dew Nongstoin Channel. Mukhim released the film at a programme in St. Vanni’s Hall, Pyndengrei, West Khasi Hills, on Monday, which was attended by NGOs leaders, local youths, young artists among others. Speaking at the programme, Mukhim appreciated the steps taken by Silver Dew Nongstoin Channel to promote Khasi film industry in the state. He emphasised that films should also be able to educate the audience about the originality of the indigenous culture and people’s way of living. Mukhim has advised young artists to grab the opportunities and utilise their talent in making progress in the industry.
MLA asks SHGs to avail govt aid
NONGSTOIN, Oct 18: Nongstoin MLA Macmillan Byrsat on Monday prodded self-help groups (SHGs) to take advantage of all the financial assistance offered by the government, while calling upon the financial institutions to be generous and lend a helping hand in guiding the rural folk to avail the services. The local MLA was speaking at the inauguration of the SHG mela-cum-health camp organised by the Office of Nongstoin BDO in collaboration with National Rural Livelihood Mission West Khasi Hills, at New Nongstoin Playground. Byrsat, during the programme, said that SHGs are mostly manned by womenfolk. “In our tradition, women possess the ability to think better for the welfare of the family members in particular and the society in general,” he added. Byrsat said that 98 per cent of SHGs in the district are run by women, while adding that women had a very vital role to shape the society in a beneficial way. Meanwhile, West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner T Lyngwa said that Mela or fairs are platforms where SGHs can exchange ideas and improve the economic condition of the general masses. The DC informed that the government, at present, is implementing schemes in various parts of the state by rooting financial assistance through village employment councils.
