Border residents fume over unmet demand

NONGPOH, Oct 22: Residents of border villages under Pilangkata on Friday warned that they will be compelled to take drastic measures if the demand for conduct of border inspection by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma continues to remain unheeded.
The residents, while reiterating their demand for border inspection by the chief minister, during a protest rally expressed discontent over the recent joint inspection conducted by Meghalaya and Assam.
The rally was in protest against the give-and-take policy, and was attended by the locals and members of the Garo Students’ Union, Ri Bhoi unit, and All Ri Bhoi Garo Women Association. During the protest, the locals maintained that the Meghalaya Government must act seriously and ensure that its land is not taken away.
Earlier on October 11, villagers from Pilangkata and Maikhuli had appealed to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to pay visit to the disputed areas and get first-hand information before accepting any report.
