SHILLONG, Nov 14: In the wake of rift over appointment of Syiem of Sohra Syiemship, KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM), Titosstarwell Chyne, has advised all Syiemship in the district to appoint their heads without any discontentment.
The CEM pointed out that it was because of such discord the Council had to appoint Syiem on temporary basis.
“I am happy since I was instrumental in the appointment of a full-fledged Syiem in Hima Sohra after my election as the CEM,” Chyne said while speaking at a function to pay tribute to former Syiem of Hima Sohra, late Duwan Sing Syiem, at St. John Bosco Shrine Sohra on Saturday.
He added that he would not like to see the differences arise while running administration of various Himas under the Council’s jurisdiction even insisted that there should be transparency and accountability in running the affairs of the Himas.
This year is the 192nd death anniversary of Duwan Sing Syiem, who had ruled Hima Sohra when Khasi Hills was fighting the Anglo-Khasi War. Duwan Sing Syiem was instrumental in uniting Hima Sohra that was previously divided. He also set the pace for the growth of literature in Sohra.
He had also signed an agreement with the Britishers on September 10, 1829, but did not surrender his freedom to them.
Earlier, as part of the observance of his death anniversary, the office of the Syiem of Hima Sohra honoured former MLA of Sohra constituency, late Dr. PW Khongjee, and felicitated a well-known diver of Khatarshnong area, Tangait Khongshei, besides Justman Synrem, an innovator who developed a technology to churn petrol out of plastic wastes.
The Syiem of Hima Sohra also organised a marathon, essay competition among other activities to mark the occasion
Legal Adviser of Hima Sohra, Dr Fenela L Nonglait, also released a book on tourism written by Phaiïolin Nongrum.
