SHILLONG, Dec 4: Two days after 600 East Khasi Hills-based members of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) — Congress’ student wing — tendered their resignation, the Meghalaya unit of Indian Youth Congress has said that despite the continual setbacks, the Congress will not deviate away from pertinent issues that plague the state.
Addressing media persons in the city on Saturday, IYC member, Banphira Basaiawmoit, said, “We, as a party, see this (ship-jumping) as an attempt to deviate the attention of the people of Meghalaya from the real issues facing the state.”
Maintaining that the grand-old party, over the decades, has seen its members switching their political allegiance, Basaiawmoit added, “We, as INC, have been witnessing it for the past 100 years… Congress is like a river; it will keep on flowing while people will come and go and more often the youths of the state from diverse backgrounds will join Congress to make it stronger than ever before.”
Conceding that the ongoing trend of members deserting the party may continue for quite some time, the IYC member asserted that the party, notwithstanding the setbacks, will continue to flag issues relating to farmers, unemployment, women, students, businessmen, infrastructure, economy, et al.
Meanwhile, former general secretary of NSUI, Arkin Warjri, said, “We will continue to strengthen our party by inducting new members, people who believe in the democratic process, Constitution of the country and progress, and who are passionate to work for the progress of the people and the state.”
He informed that the enrolment of the members of Youth Congress, which commenced two months ago, will be completed by December 12.
Informing that 20,000 youths have already enrolled for the same, Warjri said they have also launched the campaign for primary membership.
“We urge the general public at large, especially the youths of the state, not to be swayed by these dramatics,” he said.
