SHILLONG, Dec 4: Umiam Lake, which is already a major tourist destination for many, is likely to get a facelift before the 50th statehood celebrations next year.
Shedding light on this, Chairman of Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), Saleng Sangma, said that the Corporation has proposed to start adventure tourism-related activities such as parasailing, jet ski, among others, at the Umiam Lake.
Expressing hope that such a facelift will likely draw more tourists to the state, Saleng said that the government is contemplating to build docks in the Lake, exclusively for the Orchid Resort, where guests can experience riding jet skis.
In addition, he informed that the state government is also mulling to introduce cable cars in Upper Shillong area.
He also cited an example of the ropeway over Brahmaputra river in Guwahati, and said that people throng the spot there.
The MTDC chairman has already asked Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to look into the proposals with the latter already keen to start the parasailing in Umiam Lake before the 50th statehood celebrations next year.
“I have given the necessary quotation for the projects to the chief minister and he is studying it right now,” Saleng said.
