SHILLONG, Dec 8: Exuding concern over the plight of candidates appearing for banking examinations, the Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has petitioned the Regional Branch Manager of SBI, West Garo Hills, for examination centres in Garo Hills.
In a letter, FKJP general secretary, Raksrang A Sangma, argued that while West Garo Hills has a fair share of eligible aspirants willing to write various banking exams for SBI’s vacant posts, the dearth of examination centres is what creates a stumbling block for them.
In the letter, the FKJGP mentioned that the SBI currently offers only two centres for its banking exams in the state — one in iON digital zone in Iewduh, Shillong, and the other at Ramakrishna Mission, Shillong.
As such, candidates from the Garo Hills are coerced into undertaking long journeys to write the exams.
Arguing that there are many who are unable to bear the travel expenses to appear for the examinations, the FKJGP demanded that at least two SBI exam centres be set up in the Garo Hills region — one in Tura and other in any other part of the region.
