TURA, Dec 12: The death anniversary of Garo freedom fighter Pa Togan Nengminja was on Sunday observed at the Togan Memorial Park at Chisobibra near Williamnagar in East Garo Hills. The occasion, which happens to be the 149th this year, was attended by North Tura MLA Thomas A Sangma as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, Thomas recalled the contribution of Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma towards the Garo people who fought for freedom against the British troops invading Garo Hills which ultimately resulted in him laying down his life for their cause.
The chief guest also reminded that it was the duty of everyone to contribute, promote and preserve for the welfare of the people and towards the state and to the nation as a whole.
Also speaking on the occasion, local MLA Marcuise N Marak, who was the guest of honour lauded the Pa Togan Sangma Mahari Association (PTSMA) for organising the death anniversary of Pa Togan Sangma every year.
He also called upon the people to work together for the development of and peace in the state.
Earlier, Manme Marak read out the life history of Pa Togan Nengminja while patriotic song was sung by students from St. George School, Samanda.
The highlights of the day include indigenous games & sports, traditional gun salute by DEF of East Garo Hills police, paying floral tribute to the statue of Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma by dignitaries present on the occasion.
