Sohra Govt College gets B+ grade
SHILLONG, Dec 21: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has awarded B+ grade to Sohra Government College enabling the college to initiate further quality enhancement measures in the next five years, officials said on Tuesday. “Your institution has been accredited with a CGPA of 2.65 on a seven point scale at B+ grade valid for a period of 5 years from 21-12-2021,” an email from the NAAC to the college authorities stated. “I am glad to inform you that the outcome of the assessment and accreditation exercise of your institution has been processed and approved by the standing committee constituted by the executive committee to examine the peer team reports and declare the accreditation results,” it added. The NAAC, which had sent its 3-member peer team for a site inspection on December 13-14, said the original certificate of accreditation will be dispatched to the college soon. During their visit to the college, the NAAC peer team were impressed with the various initiatives undertaken by the college to tackle high drop-out rates in rural areas, improve the pass percentage besides follow-ups with the students during the pandemic. “We were very impressed with the ‘earn while you learn’ kiosk set up in the premises of the college to help students from farming backgrounds to bring their produce and display at the kiosk,” a NAAC peer team member said. At the kiosk, students bring their farm produce and keep at the kiosk with the price of the items. Some bring potatoes, some bring leafy vegetables, Sohphlang (a unique tuber and a cash crop), meat items besides others and the items are bought by the teachers and staff. “This is the very good initiative that ought to be replicated in other institutions to help students from farming communities in rural areas to earn livelihood even as they attend college,” he said. Initiated in the 1980s, it became a government college in 2011 and it is the only government college in East Khasi Hills.
Meet discusses widening of roads
SHILLONG, Dec 21: A meeting was held recently to discuss the widening options of road at Jhalupara area. MLA Sanbor Shullai sat at the meeting with the officials of National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) of India and the Shillong Cantonment Board at the Jhalupara Community Hall. In the meeting, the highway authorities ensured to manage traffic congestion in entire Shillong city and the Cantonment area in particular. NHIDCL officials also assured that residents of the Shillong Cantonment area will not face any construction-related loss nor will the authorities dismantle any land or house of the area’s civilian side. However, the alignment which was done earlier will continue and the ongoing project can be hoped to help in the regulation of traffic congestion, as discussed in the meeting. As per reports, the meeting was also attended by the general manager, NHIDCL, senior engineer of Shillong Cantonment Board, chief engineer PWD, executive engineer PWD (Roads) and various organizations of Shillong Cantonment area including Shillong Cantonment Lease Holders Association, village council and welfare organisations.
BDW Int’l School wins laurels
