SHILLONG, Jan 11: The Chief Ministers of Assam and Meghalaya will be sitting for the fourth time for resolving the interstate boundary row in at least six of the 12 identified places in Guwahati on Wednesday.
The meeting is expected to be a decisive one in view of the upcoming 50th Statehood Day celebration of Meghalaya. Both the CMs had decided to resolve the disputes pertaining to various sectors along the boundary in a phased manner.
Wednesday’s meeting will also be attended by all the chairpersons of the regional committees.
Chairman of the West Khasi Hills regional committee and Cabinet Minister, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar said, “I personally expect that a decision will be reached if Assam also understands our seriousness to resolve it before our golden jubilee celebration.”
He said it may be possible to resolve the issues in some, if not all the six areas of difference.
This meeting follows the submission of reports and recommendations to the Chief Minister by all the regional committees constituted by the government.
The West Khasi Hills committee was the first to submit its report followed by the Ri-Bhoi panel headed by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and the East Jaintia Hills panel headed by minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.
The two neighbouring states had also constituted three regional committees to examine the status of the six “less complicated” areas of differences.
The areas in question are Tarabari, Gizang and Hahim in West Khasi Hills, Ratacherra in East Jaintia Hills and Boklapara and Khanapara-Pilangkata in Ri-Bhoi district.
