TURA, Jan 19: West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh on Wednesday confirmed that the approach road to the office of the DIPR in the town of Tura will be taken up soon and work will commence in a short time.
The confirmation comes after the matter was raised by this correspondent, who paid a visit to the road in question and saw a road not worth mentioning connecting the main road to the office of the DIPR.
The area in question houses a huge number of important government offices, including the Excise, Eco Development Society, staff quarters of the Kendriya Vidyalaya, office and quarters of the DIPR, warehouse of the MePDCL, an abandoned Seismology department office quarters currently being used as a CRPF quarantine centre as well as houses of locals.
Local residents confirmed that the road has been in a terrible state since close to a decade though there have not been any complaints mainly due to the presence of the government offices. The approach road is only about 400 metres in length and lies just next to the PA Sangma stadium, beside the CRPF camp at Dakopgre. “The road situation is so bad that it becomes almost impossible to move during the monsoons mainly due to water flowing at speed to the lower reaches of the area. It is also narrow and becomes slippery for cars and people alike. We just hope that the road can be completed quickly as we desperately need its repair,” said a local.
However, on being informed, Ram Singh stated that the road was already sanctioned under the Chief Minister’s NDB Scheme. “It is being taken up and will be started at the earliest,” he said. The area in question falls under the South Tura constituency.
