SHILLONG, Jan 25: The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Tuesday said there was nothing wrong in demanding an independent inquiry into the allegations of illegal coal mining and transportation and said the party will urge its elected representatives to deliberate with the government on the contentious issue.
“A lot of allegations have been made on the illegalities so why not let us be open to all these things,” UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said.
“We will discuss the matter within the party and with the government and if we feel that nothing has come out of it then we have to seek an independent probe,” he said.
“The public has a right to know. We are not defending anybody. If anyone has committed any illegality then they should be penalised,” Mawthoh said.
He said the UDP will urge its MLAs to take up the concerns shared by the party functionaries and citizens of the state with the government.
