SHILLONG, Jan 28: KHNAM MLA from North Shillong, Adelbert Nongrum, has moved Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui over the alleged dearth of basic infrastructure at Police Reserve quarter.
In a memorandum submitted to the home minister, Nongrum said that the lack of a proper drainage and sanitation at the Police Reserve has caused a lot of inconvenience not only to the people residing in the quarters but also the residents of Wahingdoh and other nearby houses.
Informing that the situation gets further aggravated during monsoons, Nongrum said there have been times when waterlogging in Reserve Police has led to collapsing of fencing wall that secures the area.
He also said that another rain-induced landslide had claimed lives of two people.
“At a time when the government is focussed on its campaign of clean and green, the situation in Reserve Police, on the contrary, witnesses health hazard, foul smell emanating from unclean, muddy, human waste scattered all over the surface due to lack of proper sanitation and drainage systems,” the KHNAM MLA said while speaking to media persons after meeting Rymbui here on Friday.
Pointing out that the water that gets accumulated at the Police Reserve flows down to the nearby locality of Wahingdoh, Nongrum said that a part of the building meant for staff quarters in Reserve Police has been vacated and left unused in view of apprehensions that it may collapse any time.
Stating that the developmental works in the area have been neglected for years, the KHNAM MLA informed that a portion of the fencing wall, which borders the said area, continues to remain in a precarious state.
“I am, however, happy that the home minister has assured to look into the matter immediately,” an elated Nongrum said.
