Day-night cricket tourney in Phulbari

TURA, Jan 30: The first ever day-night tennis ball cricket tournament began with thousands thronging the JN Higher Secondary School Stadium in the town of Phulbari, in West Garo Hills on Sunday.
The tournament, which will be held over three days, will see 48 teams competing for the winners’ trophy and a cash prize of Rs 40,000. The runner up will take home Rs 15,000.
The three-day event is being organized by the Phulbari United Club (PUC) with assistance from local MLA, SG Esmatur Mominin.
Each match will be played with nine players with a total of 7 overs per innings. The final will be played on Feb 1.
During the opening match of the tournament, the local MLA met players of the first match, played between Yuvraj Club, Dhanerkhuti and Dadenggre before thanking the organisers for conducting the tournament. He also promised support for such future sporting endeavours of the PUC in the town of Phulbari.
“Our aim is to bring more sports into Phulbari for the youth of the area. Looking at the response to the tournament, I am convinced that the craze people have for sport pervades every area of our state and country. Hopefully we will be able to bring more such sporting events for the sports crazy people of Phulbari,” said Mominin.
