TURA, Feb 1: Dissent to the election of Rakesh A Sangma as the GHADC CEM gained momentum on Tuesday — the first day of the pen-down strike in the GHADC — with graffiti denouncing the move surfacing in various parts of the town, including at the GHADC office premises.
The two-day strike has been called by organisations that include the GSU, FKJGP, ADE, AYWO, FAF NTDF, TSCF, GGU and NESO. Albeit the NGEA has extended support to the protest, it has taken no active part so far.
The graffiti, which came up overnight, demanded the removal of the new CEM from his post. The opposing groups were brazen enough to smear the words ‘Rakesh Out’ at the main entrance of the GHADC.
Other than the graffiti, the situation at the GHADC was peaceful and passed off without any untoward incident.
The first day of the strike saw most of the employees attending office but abstaining from their respective duties. A meeting between the GHADC Secretary and officers was also held where they were asked to ensure that the employees attend office.
Sources, although unconfirmed, informed that the MDCs were in Shillong to meet up with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to discuss the issue.
