SHILLONG, Feb 1: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday made it clear that his government had nothing to do with the prevailing state of affairs in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and that he had left it for the MDCs to decide on who should lead the new Executive Committee (EC) in the Council.
Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Conrad said, “The issues that came up within the Council were the issues that matter to the MDCs. Because of the internal issues, we had a meeting and everyone wanted to change their leadership. Based on this, I left the decisions to them who should be leading the new EC in the GHADC.” Maintaining that since the GHADC is an autonomous body, “I say let the election of the CEM be a democratic process. We left for the MDCs to decide who should lead them. Based on this, the MDCs proposed a consensus name of the chairperson, Rakesh Sangma. Based on this, they went ahead in electing him as the new CEM,” the chief minister said.
