SHILLONG, Feb 7: Thirty-four projects will be initiated in the state capital under the Shillong Smart City Project (SSCP).
Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, who reviewed the progress of various projects under SSCP, said on Monday that the total cost of the projects will be Rs 1,040 crore.
Some projects such as the Polo commercial complex and re-development of the municipal market at Laitumkhrah have already started.
According to the website of the Shillong Smart City Limited, the Polo commercial complex is expected to be completed by November this year. The six-floor building will have a stilt with total built up area of 12,539 square metres.
As regards the municipal market, the existing market at Laitumkhrah is being re-developed. The total floor area is likely to be increased by 200% and the car parking spaces by 150%.
The project is expected to be completed by September next year.
It was learnt the construction of the rain water harvesting project in different government offices in Shillong under the SSCP has already started. The site clearance work the at MTC land in the Police Bazar for a project is also underway.
Under the Smart City project, the state government plans to construct a total of 6 km of smart roads as a pilot project at 16 locations of Shillong. The road length will be extended to 25 km depending on the success of the pilot project.
The Smart City Mission was one of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s key electoral promises in 2014. The scheme, launched on June 25, 2015, aims to develop 100 cities across the country, making them citizen-friendly and sustainable.
