SHILLONG, Feb 16: The process for the appointment of the state’s new Director-General of Police (DGP) is yet to start.
Home Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui told reporters on Wednesday that all necessary procedures will be followed during the appointment of the top cop.
“We are yet to start the process,” he said.
Three IPS officers, shortlisted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the post, are Lajja Ram Bishnoi (1991 batch), Mukesh Agarwal and KV Singh Deo (both 1989 batch).
Asserting that the government will choose the best from among the three, Rymbui said it is important to appoint the right man in the larger interest of the state and also for overall governance in the police force.
“We need a DGP who will be able to deal with the prevailing situation,” the Home Minister said.
He dismissed as “mere speculation” the reports about lobbying for Bishnoi by a former DGP of the state.
A government source had earlier stated that as per seniority basis, Agarwal should be appointed as the DGP but the state government is free to appoint any of the three.
Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma had said the names of the officers were proposed by the UPSC based on seniority, availability of individuals and their readiness to take up the assignment.
“We will take a decision on the new DGP after following all necessary procedures,” Sangma had said on Monday.
