Researchers should address real life problem: IITG scientist at USTM’

Guwahati, February 17 : Ph.D. is a learning process. It is always good to learn from mistakes of others rather than repeating that. In order to contribute in some way to the society, researchers should always address real life problems.

This has been stated by National Bioscience Awardee Prof. Biman B. Mandal from IIT Guwahati. Prof. Mandal was addressing the Orientation for PhD Scholars at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) here today.

The Orientation was also addressed by Prof N Lokendra Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Manipur University as the Chief Guest, Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor, USTM, Prof. G.D. Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, USTM, Prof. Chandan Kumar Sharma, Dept. of Sociology, Tezpur University, apart from others.

The programme was attended by nearly 200 PhD scholars at NKC Auditorium of the university and the lectures of the resource persons were followed by enthusiastic interaction with scholars.

Welcoming the gathering, Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of USTM said that all research scholars must be partner of USTM’s future mission. “From the very beginning of this 10-year -old university, we have been offering free education to meritorious poor students of the region. This time we have planned for fellowships and scholarships for PhD programme. For every outstanding publication in UGC care journals, we are rewarding cash awards in order to encourage research activities in the university. We have formed a Patent Consortium in the last month and 17 of our faculty members have come up with new ideas that have been processed already”, he said.

Addressing the new PhD scholars, USTM VC Prof GD Sharma said, “The purpose of research is to get training and excel in your career. At USTM, apart from 2 research methodology papers we have added 2  more course work papers: advancement in concerned subject and review of literature. Based on the quality of reviews, researcher will be marked”.

Prof N Lokendra Singh,Vice-Chancellor, Manipur University said that National Education Policy 2020 has imparted several new things in PhD research with an aim to develop universities into research universities by 2030. He expressed satisfaction for the research initiatives of USTM.

Making a presentation titled “Science for Society”, Dr Biman Mandal, Prof, Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, School of Health Sciences and Technology, IITG, said that biomedical engineering scientists are now trying to develop human tissues and organs in the laboratory that can be implanted in human body for treatment purposes.

“Science is a thought process. Identifying problem statement is very important in any research work. Researchers must know to absorb criticism and solve problems”, he added.

In his presentation titled “An approach to Quality Research”, Prof Chandan Sharma from Dept of Sociology, Tezpur University stated that ethics and values for research is contributed by humanities and social sciences.
