SHILLONG, Feb 26: Four All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) MLAs from the Garo Hills region might join the National People’s Party (NPP), sources in the ruling party have claimed.
Initially, there were talks that two of them will jump ship but now, two others are showing keenness to join the NPP. Nothing has been finalised yet but things look promising, the sources said.
“The talks are on and things are almost final. An official announcement will be made once it is all done,” an NPP leader said.
He said it will be a bonus for the party as the MLAs will join it along with their supporters.
Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma had earlier claimed some AITC leaders expressed their keenness to join the NPP.
He was reacting to reports that two AITC legislators are keen on joining the ruling party.
According to the CM, AITC leaders, not only from Garo Hills but also from Khasi and Jaintia Hills, had reached out to him.
The party will continue to engage with them, he had then said.
Sangma had also claimed that cracks and tensions surfaced within the AITC.
The NPP received a shot in the arm with the joining of AITC’s Ampati MDC, Stevie Marak in Shillong. He is said to be the right hand man of AITC stalwart, Mukul Sangma.
