TURA, March 2: In a bid to spread financial awareness and educate masses on the formal financial system, a Field Level Financial Literacy Event was held at Social Mobilization Experimentation and Learning Centre, Dakopgre, Tura on Wednesday.
The event saw the discussion on important areas such as digital banking, financial assistance available for masses and roles and functions of banks such as the Reserve Bank of India.
Officials from state government, DDMs, LDMs and regional managers of various banks and members of self-help groups attended the programme. Speaking at the occasion, Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, Ram Singh said that banks have been facilitating financial linkages to citizens, enabling them to pursue different activities and businesses.
Counting the benefits of modern-day, sustainable techniques of farming, Singh exhorted the attendees to adopt integrated farming activities including piggery, poultry, fishery, dairy along with agriculture so that they can meet the demand of the people which could also be exported to other states if there is surplus produce.
Officials further urged the people to avail the opportunity and take interest in their business activities so that they earnings increase and upscale their economy in future.
As part of the programme, the chief guest and general manager, RBI Shillong distributed loan sanction letters to entrepreneurs and Self Help Groups as well as school bags for children. Stalls of different banks like UBI, Axis, Apex Bank, etc were also put up to facilitate the beneficiaries to enrol themselves in various social security schemes, pension schemes, insurance among others. A counter to facilitate exchange of soiled notes for the participants was also put up at the programme venue.
Other members who spoke at the event include General Manager and Officer Incharge, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Meghalaya Shillong P Gangte and Assistant General Manager, RBI, Shillong, Souvik Nag.
