Brazil’s Palmeiras win Recopa after 2-0 win over Athletico
SAO PAULO, March 3: Brazil’s Palmeiras won its first Recopa Sudamericana with a 2-0 victory against fellow Brazilian side Athletico. The two teams drew 2-2 in the first leg last week. Athletico is the latest winner of the Copa Sudamericana, while Palmeiras lifted last year’s edition of the Copa Libertadores. the match features the champions of the previous year’s winners of South America’s premier club competitions. Zé Rafael opened the scoring for Palmeiras in Sao Paulo in a free kick in the 50th minute. Danilo added the second in the 88th minute. (AP)

Indian boxer in Asian Youth & Junior Boxing C’ships quarters
New Delhi, March 3: Indian boxer Anand Yadav (54kg) produced a dominating show to enter the youth quarter-finals of the Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships in Amman, Jordan on Thursday. In the junior boys’ section, Ravi Saini put up a strong show against United Arab Emirates’ Alsedrani Ali Bader in the 48kg preliminary bout, played late on Wednesday night. In the 52kg opening round bout, John Lapung went down fighting 2-3 against Kyrgyzstan’s Iasynov Nizamedin. Anand outclassed Kazakhstan’s Aslan Aslanov in a unanimous decision. (PTI)

F1 terminates contract with Russian Grand Prix
London, March 3: Formula One has terminated its contract with the Russian Grand Prix following the country’s invasion of Ukraine, saying Thursday that Russia “will not have a race” in the future. F1 already canceled this year’s race, which had been scheduled to be held in Sochi on Sept. 25. But following further discussions this week, F1 went a step further and ended a contract which ran until 2025. “Formula 1 can confirm it has terminated its contract with the Russian Grand Prix,” F1 said in a statement. “Russia will not have a race in the future.” Four-time F1 champion Sebastian Vettel and other drivers said they would not have raced in Russia even if F1 decided to go there. Verstappen’s Red Bull contract extended through 2028
London, March 3: Formula One champion Max Verstappen has signed a new deal that keeps him at Red Bull to 2028. The 24-year-old Verstappen was rewarded on Thursday for beating Lewis Hamilton to win his first world championship last year, with another five years added on the contract that ran through 2023. “Choosing to stay to the 2028 season was an easy decision,” the Dutchman said in a statement. Former Real Madrid manager Solari sacked by Club America
Mexico City, March 3: Former Real Madrid boss Santiago Solari has been sacked as manager of Club America, the Liga MX outfit said on Wednesday. The announcement came less than a day after America were held to a 1-1 home draw by Queretaro, a result that left the Mexican giants 17th in the 18-team league standings with just one win from eight matches. Assistant coaches Santiago Sanchez, Lucas Nardi and Bruno Militano also departed, the club said in a statement on social media. (IANS)
