SHILLONG, March 24: The Ganol Hydro Power project, which has come under the scanner over cost escalation, is likely to be commissioned this year.
An official from the Power department said on Thursday that the power project is due for completion soon and the department was optimistic that the project would be commissioned this year itself.
The project falls under the ambit of the independent inquiry committee, headed by Justice (retd) RN Mishra, which is due to submit its report on or before March 31.
During the recently concluded Assembly session, the All India Trinamool Congress had demanded a specific inquiry into the huge cost escalation of the Ganol Hydro Power Project from Rs 356 crore to Rs 507 crore.
The project with a capacity of 21.5 MW is being implemented in Chibragre, around 15 km from Tura. It will be the first hydro power project in the Garo Hills region.
The project has encountered several delays since it was conceived in 2006.
