SHILLONG, March 31: Petrol price has breached the Rs 100-mark once again in the capital city selling at Rs 100.07 per litre on Thursday.
Diesel was selling at Rs 86.25 per litre while the price of XP petrol was Rs 104.64.
Fuel prices have seen a steady rise in the last 10 days, with fuel pump owners asserting that prices have shot up throughout the world due the Russian-Ukraine war.
A city-based fuel pump owner said Russia is the second biggest supplier of oil after the Middle East countries.
He pointed out that even though prices have shot above Rs 100 per litre, petrol prices in Shillong was the cheapest in the country due to the lower rate of taxes being imposed by the state government.
Another fuel pump owner feared that with the current trend of escalation, petrol prices in the country may even go up to Rs 130 per litre.
Shillongites have expressed concern over the steady spike in prices of petrol and diesel that was having a domino effect on prices of essential commodities which have also shot up in recent times.
Reacting to the rising fuel prices, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said the state government will take up the issue with both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
He admitted that the state government will not be able to decide on its own and has to take the Centre into confidence before finalising measures to ease the problems faced by the common citizens due to the ever-increasing fuel and LPG prices.
“The rise in fuel prices is not restricted to Meghalaya. It is a global phenomenon due to the war between Russia and Ukraine,” Tynsong said.
Meanwhile, Congress workers in Shillong protested against the rise in petrol and diesel prices in the city.
