TURA, April 3: Contractual teachers from Garo Hills have sought clarification from the Directorate of School Education and Literacy (DSEL) in Shillong over the new instructions given recently for submitting undertakings for extension of their appointment.
According to the teachers, two separate instructions — one from the DSEL on March 9 and another by the SDSEO Dadenggre on March 12 — were issued for the extension of their appointment.
“We have been appointed by your department as contractual teachers and our appointments have been extended time to time starting from the date of the first appointment, some about 10 to 12 years back, some about 4 to 5 years back and some having been appointed in the recent past. But at no point of time undertaking was sought for by the department for extension of our appointment. But due to sudden instructions circulated by your department as aforesaid, many of the contractual teachers are in confusion,” the teachers said.
The teachers urged the Directorate to clarify whether the submission of an undertaking was mandatory or if it could be dispensed with for extension of their appointment.
Given that the latter is possible, the teachers requested that a direction be given to the SDSEO of Dadenggre to not insist on submitting the undertaking or to call them for discussion and clarify the matter.
