SHILLONG, April 7: The state government is set to add several attractions to tourist hotspot Umiam Lake near the state capital in order to promote the tourism sector.
The attractions include a floating restaurant, para sailing, jet ski etc. The government is also mulling introducing cable car service.
Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation Chairman, Saleng Sangma, on Thursday said the construction work of the floating restaurant has already started and a Kolkata-based firm is implementing the project.
He said the contractor has been asked to expedite the work so that the project is completed within the next few months.
The tourism sector is expected to get a boost with the introduction of these attractions. The state government had approved sanction for the introduction of para sailing and jet ski activities two days ago, Sangma said.
The government has identified some firms to operate the services. If everything goes as planned, these activities will be introduced within this month.
The government is also examining the idea of introducing cable cars across Umiam Lake but wants to be absolutely certain about the safety aspect.
According to Sangma, the plan is to have the cable car service from the Convention Centre in Umiam Lake to a nearby island.
“If we can come up with cable cars, it would be a better experience than the cable car service in Guwahati over the Brahmaputra river as the location in Umiam is much more beautiful,” Sangma said.
