SHILLONG, April 8: KHNAM MLA from North Shillong, Adelbert Nongrum, has suggested the Traffic department a slew of measures to address the traffic congestion at Police Bazaar.
Nongrum on Friday inspected the Police Bazaar area along with senior government officials, including Additional SP (Traffic) Ian Swer, among others, to find out ways and means to ease the traffic congestion.
Speaking to media persons, Nongrum suggested the government to come up with a stratagem to address the traffic congestion.
He said the Traffic department can allow vehicles to ply both ways along the bylane from City Hut Dhaba to Polo Towers on a trial basis. He also suggested the Traffic department to consider creating a parking space for local taxis along the stretch near MUDA complex, while claiming that at least 30 local taxis can be parked along the stretch.
Nongrum said if a parking space is created along the stretch near MUDA complex, not only will the passengers be able to board cabs from there but doing so will also remove the roadside hawkers from the place to ease the congestion.
Meanwhile, Nongrum also questioned as to how are VIPs allowed to park their vehicles at Police Bazaar when it is causing inconvenience to the general public.
“It is important for the Traffic department to review its decision to allow vehicles to ply through the Bijou Cinema to Dreamland. The plying of vehicles has damaged the floor tiles which were laid along this road as part of the beautification of Khyndai Lad area,” the KHNAM MLA said.
I have also asked the Traffic department to submit a report if they cannot accept these suggestions, Nongrum added.
