TURA, April 8: The upcoming amphitheatre at New Tura, which is expected to be completed by next month, has become a den for drinkers, who have been making use of the idyllic location to enjoy themselves. To add to that, the unfinished amphitheatre has also become a favourite hang-out for couples who visit the place for time-to-time trysts.
This scribe paid a visit to the place on Friday evening only to discern bottles of alcoholic beverages deliberately broken at places which will act as seats for the audience at the amphitheatre. The broken bottles pose threat to anyone who may visit the place once the amphitheatre is up and running.
Moreover, according to the locals, the place has also become a haunt for couples looking to spend some time alone.
WGH Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh has, meanwhile, assured that the matter will be immediately looked into.
“The construction is expected to be completed and handed over next month by the MGCC. I have informed the police team of the situation of alcohol bottles and this will be looked into with immediate effect,” said the DC.
The project, which was apparently sanctioned in 2017, is under the aegis of the Arts and Culture department with the construction being carried out by the Meghalaya Government Construction Corporation.
While the building and structure of the amphitheatre is complete, work on the surrounding boundary wall is yet to be finished. Once the leftover work is completed, it is expected that such cases see a decline.
The amphitheatre, once completed, is also expected to host many events, mainly related to art, craft, theatre, music, among other things.
