JOWAI, April 18: The delay in finalisation of landfill sites for scientific waste management has compounded the garbage crisis in Jowai with rubbish continuing to pile up each day near the entrance to the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Jowai, and near Thomas Jones Synod College.
The sufferers of the foul smell emanating from the heaps of garbage are aplenty too — at least nine nearby shops, unable to bear the smell, have temporarily shut down their operations.
To make matters worse, the haphazardly dumped garbage also attracts innumerable houseflies, thereby inviting diseases.
It may be mentioned that Jowai continues to be beleaguered with waste management crisis with locals not being able to dispose of domestic waste.
The Jowai Municipal Board, which was once tasked with collection and disposal of garbage, has now stopped doing the same since first week of February in view of no landfill site.
Albeit the state government has identified some place places for landfill sites, the finalisation of the same is yet to be made.
