TURA, April 29: Amid the hullaballoo over the alleged shoddy construction of the Rongjeng Model College in East Garo Hills, a delegation of state officials along with All India Trinamool Congress state president Charles Pyngrope on Thursday visited the site and inspected the ongoing college construction.
The officials who were part of the delegation include Additional Chief Secretary of Education department DP Wahlang, Director of School Education and Literacy Ambrose Marak, and East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Swapnil Tembe.
The delegation was also joined by members of various local groups and residents of Rongjeng.
The visit comes at a time when protests have been carried out vehemently by various pressure groups who are alleging that the Rongjeng Model College has been recklessly constructed by the contractor.
The pressure groups have also demanded that the college building be constructed as per the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
The protests were recently called off by the pressure groups after they were assured by the district administration and the Education department that a fact-finding team will visit the college site at the earliest.
The findings of the inspection are yet to be divulged.
Earlier, the Public Accounts Committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly had taken note of the complaints by the NGOs and scheduled a visit to look into the alleged anomalies on Thursday. Officials of the Education department were also asked to accompany the delegation.
Meanwhile, Rongjeng-based groups have expressed hope that the team would look into the alleged sub-standard building construction as well as rectify the changes made to the DPR.
“We hope they take the matter seriously and provide us with the college we have been promised. This has been a dream of everyone from the C&RD Block and we wish to see it fulfilled,” they said.
