Family banished, house torched in West Jaintia Hills

JOWAI, May 16: A family was rendered homeless after they were shunted out of their village and their house torched by villagers on allegations of practicing witchcraft or Taro in the local dialect.
The crime was committed allegedly at the behest of the Dorbar Shnong. The incident took place at Saba village bordering Karbi Anglong in Assam on May 14 and 15.
The victims, Nijanduh Phawa and her husband, Nicholas Nartiang filed a police complaint at Nartiang stating that on May 14, the headman of Saba accompanied by a mob vandalised their house and the very next day they torched the house.
West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, Bikram D Marak, said a case has been registered but no one has been arrested so far. He informed that the affected family was staying in the house of one of their relatives in another village.
