NH-6 partially reopens to traffic

SHILLONG, May 16: Traffic movement on the arterial Umkiang-Ratacherra stretch of National Highway 6 was partially restored on Monday afternoon.
Hundreds of passengers and scores of vehicles were stranded on NH-6 since Friday due to landslides caused by heavy rains.
East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner, Abhilash Baranwal confirmed that one side of two-lane highway was cleared and movement of vehicles have resumed.
Baranwal also informed that the entire road would be cleared by Tuesday evening if there are no more landslides.
The district administration had asked a government wholesale supplier and the NHAI to provide water and food items to the stranded commuters.
