State youths to receive skill training
SHILLONG, May 26: The Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS) on Thursday enrolled 20 new local training providers under Skills Meghalaya during a ceremony at its office. According to a statement, the new training providers will impart training on bamboo craft, data entry operator, traditional tassel making, integrated farming, solar PV installation, et al, covering approximately 1,325 beneficiaries. “MSSDS intends to cover 20,000 youth in this year and 1.2 lakh youth in the next five years under the three domains, viz. skilling, livelihood and entrepreneurship to include recent dropouts, unemployed adults, persons seeking certification of their skills acquired informally and persons seeking skill upgradation,” the statement said.
Workshop on UNDRIP, 6th Schedule
NONGSTOIN, May 26: A one-day workshop-cum-seminar on United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India under the project ‘Strengthening women’s voices in land resource governance’ was conducted by a Shillong-based non-governmental organisation called Grassroot at Trysem Hall, West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Thursday. Team Lead at Grassroot, Lyntiborn Marngar, in a PowerPoint presentation, shed light on some subjects relating to UNDRIP which bore similarities with the Sixth Schedule in a bid to indigenous people are being protected from exploitation and discrimination. She added that tribes in Meghalaya have not been recognised as indigenous people despite being a community having their own land, culture and tradition. A short documentary film on the power of local authority was also presented during the programme, which was attended by officials from all government departments.
Mega convention of poetess begins
TURA, May 26: The 20th and 21st National Mega Convention of All India Poetess Conference (AIPC) which is being held for three days at Pastoral Centre, Walbakgre in Tura, was kicked off on Thursday by North Tura MLA Thomas A Sangma. The conference is scheduled from May 26 to 28. The North Tura MLA attended the inaugural function in the morning as the chief guest in the presence of Crisline T Sangma, Retired Director of Fisheries, Tura, as the special guest. Women writers and poets from all over the country, some of whom were exceptionally talented, converged at the convention on the first day. Women writers, especially from Karnataka and Assam made up most of the participants. The 20th and 21st Convention took place together as the pandemic had prevented both of the conventions from taking place in the previous two years. The first day of the Convention took place with poetry recitations or kavyadhara in various languages and ended with a cultural evening.
