SHILLONG, June 25: Impressed with the success of the Shillong Technology Park, the Information Technology and Communications department is working on the second phase of the IT park in New Shillong Township.
According to officials, the proposal is being worked out and will be submitted to the state government once it is ready.
As of now, two companies are operating from the Shillong Technology Park and six to seven more companies have committed to the state government to operate from there.
It is learnt that as of now, around 100 youths are employed in the Shillong Technology Park.
While many believe that the idea of the Shillong Technology Park should have been implemented much before, the officials, however, believe that sooner or later, big guns of IT sector will come to Shillong.
The Shillong Technology Park was launched earlier this year by the Meghalaya government in a bid to render a much-needed impetus for the bedevilled employment scenario in Meghalaya.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had also expressed hope that the Shillong Technology Park will provide golden opportunities to IT professionals of Meghalaya, who are employed outside the state.
It may be mentioned that the state government, which funded the first phase of the Shillong Technology Park, is encouraging the operation of the Shillong Technology Park on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for the subsequent phases.
