SHILLONG, June 28: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, also in charge of power, said the process of restructuring the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) will begin immediately.
He told reporters on Tuesday that the Power department will soon come up with the notification on the constitution of a search committee to be headed by Chief Secretary Rebecca V Suchiang.
Tynsong said the search committee will float the expressions of interest from candidates who want to become the managing director of the MeECL and of its three subsidiaries.
The search committee will screen the applicants and then recommend the names of the potential candidates to the state government for the appointment.
Appreciating the cabinet for approving the proposal to restructure the MeECL, Tynsong said the power minister will be the non-executive chairman of the holding company (MeECL) from now onwards.
“We have decided to rope in technocrats from the Central Electricity Board (CEA) and Ministry of Power who possess the degree of Indian Engineering Services (IES) to become the MD of the MeECL. The objective of the department is to segregate various positions to improve the functioning of the MeECL,” he said.
The deputy chief minister said the chairman of the three subsidiaries – Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Limited, Meghalaya (Contd on P-9)
MeECL restructuring soon…
(Contd from P-3) Power Distribution Corporation Limited and Meghalaya Power Transmission Corporation Limited – will be headed by senior officials at the level of chief secretary, principal secretaries and commissioners and secretaries.
He said the government wanted to make sure the MD of the corporation will be responsible for looking after all the three subsidiaries full time.
“I am pretty confident that the steps taken by the government will be able to transform the function of the MeECL as well as its three subsidiaries,” he added.
