SHILLONG, June 30: In what can be dubbed as breaking stereotypes in Meghalaya, new DGP of the state Lajja Ram Bishnoi decided to take a brisk walk on Thursday evening and visited some parts of the city to supervise the existing security arrangement and understand the problems faced by the people.
Bishnoi was accompanied by Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Shailendra Bamaniya, and a handful of police officials as they marched from Khyndai Lad junction, covering Iew Them Mawlong , Mothphran, Jaiaw Students’ Field, Jaiaw Pdeng and Jaiaw Mawbynna before returning.
On the way, he interacted with passersby, students and shopkeepers, enquiring about their problems and insecurities in a gesture which meant to bring policing closer to the people. “We have visited some areas to understand the problems faced by the people and simultaneously also to supervise the existing security arrangements. If the need arises, we can strengthen the existing security that is why I decided to speak and interact with the citizens here so that they can tell us if any problem is there or not,” the DGP said.
In the course of his interactions with the people, Bishnoi said he has learned that they are satisfied with the current security arrangement. He, however, said that police will continue keeping vigil in the areas to ensure that miscreants do not create problems.
“From Harijan Colony, Jaiaw areas and some other areas, we are receiving complaints about drug abuse and other things so I decided to come and see,” he added.
The DGP said that the department will convene a meeting with the headmen to understand their views and problems and seek their support and help. The meet will tentatively be conducted on Tuesday next week.
In his message to the youths, he said, “Youth should concentrate on study and not indulge in illegal activities. If they have any problem, they should feel free to approach the police and civil administration. We will try our best to address their grievance; they should remain away from drugs, illegal activities assaults and threatening people for no reason. This will send wrong signal outside the state.”
Asked whether the visit will continue, he said, “This will continue; we will visit all the areas of Shillong, we will assess the security arrangement also. If we can see the area on foot, it gives us better perception, our understanding will increase and it will be easy to interact with people and understand their problem and plan a strategy in case problem arises.”
