SHILLONG, July 21: The state government has been asked to set up two government-inclusive schools for persons with disabilities (PwDs) similar to Bethany Society.
Making this appeal, the Meghalaya Pradesh Trinamool Youth Congress (MPTYC) pointed out that the PwDs have been facing problems due to the absence of trained and qualified teachers in the select special schools.
Talking to reporters on Thursday, president of the MPTYC East Khasi Hills district Waiki Snaitang said Bethany Society and Jyoti Sroat are the only two special schools able to cater to the needs of the PwDs.
According to Snaitang, there are many PwDs who are eager to pursue their studies and wanted to admissions in Jyoti Sroat.
“But for many who come from families belonging to economically weaker section do not have the financial resources to pursue their studies in these institutions,” he said.
In this context, the youth TMC chief of East Khasi Hills has sought the establishment of government-run Computer Training Centre as many cannot afford to pursue computer courses outside the state.
Asserting that it is important for the PwDs to land a job in the government sectors, he said, “The fact is that four per cent job reservation for the PwDs in the government department is not being followed. We urge the state government to implement this reservation in letter and spirit.”
Snaitang said that the Rs 500 monthly financial assistance for PwDs is insufficient and that it should be increased to Rs 2,000 per month.
