SHILLONG, July 26: The police will shortly file a charge sheet in the case of the murder of two minors allegedly by their father, Joefreeson Jana at Wahktieh, Nongrah Nonglum on May 30.
Officials said the police investigation into this case is in an advanced stage and the charge sheet could be filed in the next 10 days.
The members of the Meghalaya Assembly Committee on Empowerment of Women (MACEW) have expressed their satisfaction with the police investigation.
“The police are way ahead in the collection of evidence and presentation of the case. We are told that they have managed to build a watertight case,” MACEW chairperson Ampareen Lyngdoh told reporters.
She said the police are confident that the murder accused would be convicted by the court.
The MACEW chairperson also said the Social Welfare Department has processed the payment of Rs 5 lakh as ex-gratia payment to the family of the two minors.
“The amount is likely to be released to the family at the earliest,” she said.
Lyngdoh also said the Superintendent of Police of East Jaintia Hills brief her about the murder of a woman by her husband at her residence in Jalyiah village recently. The husband, too, was killed.
The woman was allegedly strangulated by her husband, identified as Plom Dkhar from the same village, with a small piece of cloth.
Lyngdoh said the committee members were also briefed about the crimes against women and children in East Jaintia Hills.
She said the SP had informed the committee that 26 cases of crimes against children, including cases under the POCSO Act have been registered since January this year. The SP was told to provide the details of all these cases to the committee.
Lyngdoh further said the committee is concerned about teenage pregnancy. “We have requested the police, the Meghalaya State Commission for Women and the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights to work together to address the rise in the number of teenage pregnancies in the state,” she said.
