JOWAI, July 28: In the alleged absence of any action on part of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) or the East Jaintia Hills (EJH) district administration to repair the ill-maintained National Highway-6 (NH-6), the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) EJH District Unit on Thursday shut down the NHAI toll gate at Lumshnong to ensure that no fee is collected from vehicles.
The condition of NH-6 has been worsening with every passing day with the most deplorable parts present in district headquarter Khliehriat and Umkiang, which are giving road users a hard time.
A group of KSU members led by EJH unit president Streamly N Suchen locked the toll gate asked all operators and staff to stop collecting the toll from vehicles.
According to the KSU, the Union had met the Additional Deputy Commissioner of EJH urging the official to approach the NHAI.
However, they have received no response despite it being apparent that the condition of the road has been deteriorating.
