SHILLONG, July 29: A joint operation by a team of police and BSF has thwarted an infiltration bid and nabbed two people — one Bangladeshi and one Indian national — in Jaintia Hills.
According to a statement from the Office of the East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, a team of police and BSF launched an operation on Thursday following a tip-off about Bangladeshi nationals making attempt to intrude illegally into Indian territory through jungle and unfenced parts of the international border.
During the course of the operation, the team spotted a person coming from a jungle area near Pyrtakuna village and subsequently boarding a vehicle (AS-11-CC-4582).
The driver and the occupant, upon noticing the team of police and BSF, sped away only to be intercepted at Kuliang village by the latter.
The driver, identified as Warif Uddin Laskar from Assam, and the passenger, Masum Uddin from Bangladesh, were subsequently nabbed.
Upon interrogation, the Bangladeshi national further revealed that there were some more people from Bangladesh who tried to illegally enter the Indian territory through the jungle but on seeing the BSF party, they fled inside the woods again.
“In this regard, the BSF party has been alerted and an operation is on to nab the other illegal intruders,” the statement informed.
Meanwhile, a case against the duo has been registered at Lumshnong Police Station.
“It is to be noted that in the past 52 days, 26 Bangladeshi nationals, who crossed over illegally into Indian territory, have been arrested in East Jaintia Hills district and four cases have been registered and necessary action has been taken as per law,” the statement said.
