SHILLONG, Aug 1: As many as 800 contractual teachers who were sacked from government lower primary schools in 2021 have asked the government to reinstate them without delay.
The LP teachers were sacked after they failed to clear the Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET).
The Meghalaya Government LP Contractual Teachers’ Association on Monday staged a sit-in outside the Chief Minister’s bungalow but they were shifted to the road outside the MBoSE office.
The teachers said they had been appointed in 2010 and 2012 but their service was terminated last year following the introduction o the MTET in 2018-19.
The teachers claimed they had met Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma who had assured to examine their demands.
President of the teachers’ association, Birbor Riangtem said, “Though MTET was introduced in 2018, the examination was conducted only in 2019 and by that time many of us were past the qualifying age and did not clear the exam.”
