TURA, Aug 20: A conglomeration of organisations from Garo Hills comprising GSU, FKJGP, ADE and AYWO has decided to hold a sit-in in Shillong to continue their protest against the memorandum of understanding signed between the state and Assam on Monday, Aug 22.
The demonstration will be held near the Civil Hospital junction in front of the U Kiang Nangbah Memorial Statue at 11 am.
“We reiterate that the signing of MoU and subsequent surrendering of Meghalaya’s land to Assam without the consent of the people of the areas is unfounded and uncalled for. We are committed to assert our apprehensions with the blessings of our people. We earnestly hope that the government of the day will relook into the matter and rectify the mistakes,” stated the release by the organisations on the matter.
The groups also appealed to right thinking citizens of the state to participate in the protest to give a strong message in unison to the MDA government.
“The people of Meghalaya don’t want to simply part with their rightful ownership of the land which was owned by our ancestors proudly since time immemorial. This message has to be made amply clear to the present government,” stated the NGOs.
It may be mentioned that Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma is likely to meet his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati on Sunday for the second phase of the proposed border talks to resolve the differences in the remaining six areas.
