Slew of events, activities to mark Natl Sports Day across districts

SHILLONG, Aug 26: As part of the celebration of National Sports Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on Monday, a slew of programmes and activities across all districts will be organised by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs including a function in the state capital to felicitate sportspersons for their achievements in various sporting disciplines in regional, zonal, national or international-level competition in 2018-19 and 2019-20.
At the city event, three school teams who will represent Meghalaya in the upcoming 61st edition of Subroto Mukherjee Cup international football tournament in New Delhi will be given send-off.
The programme will be held at U Soso Tham Auditorium, Meghalaya Shillong and will be attended by Chief Secretary DP Wahlang as the chief guest.
‘5K Run’
In East Khasi Hills, the office of the District Sports Officer in collaboration with the office of the Deputy Commissioner will conduct the ‘National Sports Day 5K Run’ on Monday, which will begin from JN Stadium Main Gate at 6.30 am.
Other events which will be held are ‘Invitation Inter-School Mawpoin and Tug of War Competition’ at Basketball Court, JN Stadium, Polo, from 9 am, and ‘Recreational & Fun Games for Children’ at all Football Grass Root Centre’s of East Khasi Hills on Saturday.
The run will start from JN Stadium Main Gate, Polo, and proceed towards S.R.G.T Main Gate, Golf Club, Lad Shyiap, MPPS, Lad Sanker, Mawroh Junction, FCI Junction, FCI, MeECL, Shillong Secondary School, CRPF Main Gate, S.R.G.T Main Gate, and culminate at the starting point.
The run will be conducted in open category for all and prize money will be awarded to the winners along with trophies and certificates.
Cash prize of Rs 5000, Rs 3000 and Rs 2000 will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, 3rd places, respectively, while consolation prize of Rs 1,000 will also be awarded for 4th to 8th position holders.
Also, the organisers have announced cash prize of Rs 1,000 for veteran top 5 finishers of over 50 years of age.
Interested persons can register themselves online and are required tp collect the chest number from the office of the District Sports Officer, East Khasi Hills, at JN Sports Complex Polo, Shillong, on Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. Also, free T-shirt will be distributed to registered participants only.
