Event pays homage to Phan Nonglait

NONGSTOIN, Aug 31: A programme on theatre, folk dance and patriotic songs paid rich tributes to Khasi freedom fighter Phan Nonglait at her birthplace in Nongrmai village, Eastern West Khasi Hills, on Wednesday.
The programme titled ‘Ka Phan Nonglait- Tribute to Unsung Heroes’ was organised by the North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC), Dimapur, Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Directorate of Arts and Culture, Meghalaya government, as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.
Eastern West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner W Nongsiej, who was the chief guest during the programme, dwelt at length on the history and legacy of Phan Nonglait, and her journey as not only a valiant freedom fighter but also an advocate of women’s rights.
The DC also exhorted the gathering to draw inspiration from the life of Phan Nonglait and strive to conserve one’s unique culture, identity and tradition, and to stand up against exploitation of women.
The programme featured patriotic songs and colourful cultural dances presented by artistes from the district and from Shillong.
The major highlight of the programme was the enactment of a play on the life and struggles of Phan Nonglait by theatre artiste Lapdiang Syiem and her group.
Others who were part of the programme include Syiem and Myntri of Hima Nongkhlaw, Supreme Court Advocate and author of Ka Phan Nonglait- A Lady Freedom Fighter of India Daniel Stone Lyngdoh Nonglait, Assistant Director of Directorate of Arts and Culture, D. Kharjana, government officials, village elders, students, et al.
