Subroto Cup kit, official ball and trophies unveiled
New Delhi, Sep 2: Former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia was among the dignitaries present as the Subroto Cup kit, official ball and trophies for the 61st edition of the football tournament were unveiled. The tournament will begin on September 6 in the national capital. Air Marshal K Anantharaman VSM, Air Officer-in-Charge Administration and Vice Chairman, SMSES, graced the occasion as chief guest while Bhutia was the guest of honour. The Subroto Cup, an annual school football tournament which first started in 1960 by the first Indian Air Force Chief, Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee, will be resuming after a pandemic-induced break of two years. This year, a total of 92 schools representing 25 states and union territories of India have qualified across the three categories and a team from Bangladesh will also be participating. (PTI)

Kyrgios fined USD 7,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct
New York, Sep 2: Nick Kyrgios has been fined USD 7,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct during his second-round victory at the US Open. Kyrgios was warned after using profanity toward someone in the stands on Wednesday. It appeared the Wimbledon runner-up was yelling at someone in his own box, telling the person to be more supportive or leave. The temperamental Australian also complained to the chair umpire about the smell of marijuana during the second set. The fine was the highest given to a player at the tournament thus far. (AP)

Hitaashee Bakshi wins 11th leg of Hero WPGT
Hyderabad, Sep 2: Hitaashee Bakshi survived a late charge from Pranavi Urs to emerge champion in the 11th leg of the Hero Women’s Pro Golf Tour, here on Friday. Hitaashee recovered from a double bogey on the Par-5 seventh hole on the front nine, to card an even par 72 in the final round. This was Hitaashee’s third win of the season, having won the third and sixth legs of the Tour. The victory took her earnings to Rs 8,15,000 and she is now in second place with Seher Atwal (Rs.7,50,000) in third place. While Hitaashee claimed the top spot, Pranavi finished second. Sneha Singh, lying one shot adrift, had a rough day with a double bogey and three bogeys against three birdies for a 74 that saw her slip. She still awaits her maiden trophy as a professional, even though she has emerged triumphant as an amateur. (PTI)

BFI to hold Zonal C’ships in bid to unearth female talents
New Delhi, Sep 2: The Boxing Federation of India in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India will organise five Open Zonal Championships, where approximately 3000 youth and junior female pugilists are expected to participate. The championships, starting next month, are a joint initiative of BFI and SAI in their bid to unearth and nurture new talents from across the country. The events will be held in junior girls and youth women categories. The grassroot level initiative will start with the Khelo India East Zone Open Zonal Boxing Championship to be held in Guwahati from September 15. The junior girls competition is expected to witness 1400 entries, while 1600 boxers are likely to participate in the youth women section. Successful pugilists from the four zonal tournaments will progress to the Combined Open Zonal Boxing Championship. The Zonal Championship is part of BF’s plans to increase the bench strength for India women’s boxing. (PTI)

Japan Open: Prannoy loses to Chen in quarter-finals
Osaka (Japan), Sep 2: India’s campaign at the Japan Open 2022 badminton tournament came to an end on Friday after HS Prannoy lost to Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen in the men’s singles quarter-finals, here. Up against an in-form Chen, the fourth seed and bronze medallist from the BWF World Championships held last month, Prannoy put up a gritty fight but eventually lost 21-17, 15-21, 22-20 in a marathon clash that stretched for one hour and 21 minutes. Prannoy’s exertion was visible after the long struggle and unforced errors kept creeping into his game. Chen eventually edged out the decider 22-20 to secure his fourth win over Prannoy in seven head-to-head meetings. (IANS)
