EKH elderly voters feted in city

SHILLONG, Oct 1: Elderly voters from different constituencies in East Khasi Hills were on Saturday felicitated during a programme to mark the International Day of Older Persons.
According to a statement, the programme, which was organised by the Office of the District Election Officer, East Khasi Hills, at Mercy Home in Demthring, was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner R Wahlang.
Addressing the gathering, Wahlang said that elderly people have been playing a vital role in strengthening the Indian democracy.
He also informed that the Election Commission has decided to facilitate voting for elderly in the state by introducing vote from home besides other special initiatives at polling stations.
“Postal ballots will be allowed for those aged above 80 after filling Form 12 D if they are unable to go to the polling stations,” the ADC said, maintaining that the aim is to encourage senior citizens in exercising their franchise.
